“L’estate scorsa in montagna ho registrato circa 90 brani live, a mo’ di improvvisazione jazz ma elettronica, diciamo, utilizzando due dei nostri strumenti lep: 3 Leploop Multicassa e un Arpopone, più qualche effetto. Mi sono volutamente limitato nel set up per rimanere più concentrato e creativo.
Poi verso fine 2019 ho chiesto all'amica Philippa Nicole Barr di operare una selezione delle 90 tracce. Giornalista freelance australiana di Wire (ma non solo) di base a Sidney che avevo conosciuto a Milano nel 2012 per un’articolo sulla scena musicale sperimentale milanese, Philippa mi sembrava la persona più adatta per aiutarmi in questa impossibile selezione, anche stimolato dalla sua lontananza da Milano.
Cosi Philippa ha selezionato 5\7 tracce io ne ho suggerite un'altro paio e alla fine ne abbiamo tenute 6. Philippa mi ha suggerito di intitolare le tracce con qualche nome in italiano perchè all'estero sarebbero suonate piu' particolari, esotiche.
Ho trovato i nomi di alcune erbe selvatiche commestibili che si raccolgono in Val Trompia, dove ho la casa e ho finalizzato le tracce.
Anciana è il nome di un'erba selvatica commestibile in dialetto valtrumpino.
Philippa ha chiesto poi ad un suo amico fonico australiano di fare il master, David Matthew, un produttore di musica elettronica che si fa chiamare anche B.I.N.T.
Poi ho chiesto all’amica Judy Rhum se le andava di pensare alla copertina. A Barnaba è piaciuto così tanto il tutto che, oltrea a farlo uscire per la sua etichetta Sangue Disken, ha confezionato pure un video per il il brano “Farinel”, tutto girato dalla finestra di casa di sua mamma, dove è stato bloccato dall’inizio del lockdown causato dal Covid-19.” (Tonylight, 2020)

Often tension is built over time, but in this collection the explosion happens early, and the emotions follow forth, from tension to a kind of discomfort and reflectiveness.
My role in producing this album was to listen to hours of recordings with Tony’s unique handmade instruments and find the more distinctive sounds and compatible rhythms. Listening to this series of experiments, I found them cropping up kind of accidentally, like fungi. Their growth patterns were uneven and occasionally their strangeness was peculiar. So I picked out a selection and we started working on putting them together, turning them into new things, conscious of their ever growing and mutating forms.
It was important that the chosen tracks really showed off their full emotive range of these instruments, from the crunchier beats of Spares and Verzuli, to the vibrato pendulum of Farinel, and the more laid back and lugubrious patterns of Loertis , rounding down into minor keys. It produces an unsettled effect, like an abandoned garden that has left its plants to their wildly different rates of growth, a particularly impressive range given their origins. Antonio Cavadini aka TONYLIGHT lives and works in Milan. Tonylight is the founder of the micromilano hq part of
Micromusic.net project, a community where he finds friends with similar interests being a crucial actor in building up the Italian 8-bit culture. Tony’s carrier divides between visual artistic/light figures inspections and electronic music designing. Being a never exhausted experimentalist, he performed in an infinite number of private and contemporary arts galleries and in the framework of Italian and European culture festivals. During the years, Tonylight builds-up various collaborations with international artists to perform in several museums along EU. Teaching is an essential Tony’s passion, giving several technical talks about the use of simple and home-built electronic setups at universities. Tonylight is the LEPLOOP creator & designer together with Peppo Lasagna. Tony is a legendary member of OTOLAB. 51beats has published his first solo album Chosen Works 09-14 (vol. 1): an 8-bit journey thorough Tony’s electrons divided in 2 volume. Tonylight is a real 8bit techno-dadaist that uses gameboys and homemade analogue drum machines in his detroit influenced club sessions.
He lives and works in Milano, Italy.
In his life he combines soldering and music making.
As a musician and explorer, he has been fascinated by 8Bit music since the beginning and joined the community.
He plays the Gameboy old computers like Nes and Atari ST and analog synth and sequencer, since 2001.
Due to the simplicity of the applied tools, he finds lightness and freshness in the 8Bit scene.
Le prime sonorità bizzarre ad emergere dall’Italia furono quelle degli esperimenti Futuristi, negli albori del ventesimo secolo. Nel 1910 il ravennate Francesco Balilla Pratella pubblica il ‘Manifesto dei musicisti futuristi’, per raccogliere e incitare i giovani a sfidare le convenzioni dell’epoca. Poco dopo l’amico Luigi Russolo incominciò ad esibirsi suonando il rumore con strumenti autocostruiti denominati intonarumori. Nel 1950 Luciano Berio e Bruno Maderna allestirono all’interno degli studi RAI un pioneristico studio per produrre ‘musica elettronica colta’. Oggi, questa onda innovatrice mai sopita prosegue attraverso la distribuzione, la composizione, le performance e l’invenzione di strumenti musicali come quelli prodotti da Peppo Lasagna e Antonio Cavadini aka Tony Light, entrambi facenti parte del collettivo otolab, che dal 2001 raccoglie musicisti, dj, vj, videoartisti, videomaker, web designer, grafici e architetti uniti nell’affrontare un percorso comune nell’ambito della musica elettronica e della ricerca audiovisiva. Fieramente e attitudinalmente underground. I due costruirono nel 2011 il Leploop, un sintetizzatore, sequencer e drum machine analogico prodotto in prime 500 copie a Milano, una delle loro prime macchine che è ancora in vendita e che fa ormai parte integrante dei set di personaggi come Chris Carter dei Throbbing Gristle, IIpo Väisänen (Pan Sonic) Surgeon, Kink, Yuko Araki e Liquid Limbs. Poi ne hanno costruiti altri, tipo Lumanoise, LEP Multi Cassa e in arrivo c’è l’arpoloop. È il secondo album che Sangue Disken pubblica di Tonylight, il primo, finalmente, debitamente mixato e masterizzato e che è distribuito su tutte le piattaforme digitali online.
